SHERA Graduate Student / Independent Scholar Travel Grant for participation in CAA 2019

Thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous donor, the Society is pleased to announce the SHERA Graduate Student / Independent Scholar Travel Grant to defray travel costs through the awarding of up to $1,000 for local travel and up to $1,500 for international travel to one member presenting a paper at the CAA Annual Conference or the ASEEES Annual Convention. The grant is given for five consecutive years (2017-2021), alternating between the CAA conferences and the ASEEES conventions, beginning with CAA 2017 in New York City. The alternating order of the subsequent grants is as follows: CAA 2017, ASEEES 2018, CAA 2019, ASEEES 2020, CAA 2021.

Applications will be evaluated based on the academic merit of the paper topic and financial need. SHERA is especially committed to subsidizing a graduate student or independent scholar who is attending the conference for the first time and presenting a paper, and who has no local institutional resources for travel support. Eligible independent scholars are those SHERA members who have been awarded the Ph.D. within the previous five years. For the CAA 2019 grant, applications are limited to those who have received the Ph.D. no earlier than 2013. Applicants must be SHERA members in good standing and must submit:

1. the title and a brief description of their paper (no more than 250 words);
2. a brief CV (no more than two pages);
3. the names of the chair(s) and the title of the panel in which the applicant is participating;
4. and, a brief statement demonstrating need.

For more information on membership or to become a member, see http://shera-art.org/membership/join-shera.php Within two months after the conference, the recipient is required to submit to the SHERA Board a brief report outlining how participation in the conference furthered the development of their research. If the recipient has to withdraw from the conference for any reason, all funds must be returned to SHERA no later than the opening day of the conference. We are pleased to announce that the Inaugural Maya Semina Travel Grant has been awarded to Maria Lanko, a graduate student from the University of Aberdeen and a presenter at one of SHERA panels for emerging scholars.

Maria will present a paper entitled “Participation and Collectivity in Art of the Soviet and Post-Soviet Belarus, Moldova, and Ukraine since the 1970s” at the panel Emerging Scholars: Politics and Collective in East European and Russian Art, Part One, which will take place on Wednesday, February 15, from 10:30-12:00, West Ballroom, 3rd Floor, New York Hilton Midtown, in the framework of the 105th Annual College Art Association Conference.

We are also pleased to remind you that in the years to come one young scholar will be able to participate at a SHERA-sponsored session of CAA or ASEEES with the help of he Maya Semina Travel Grant.

ANN: Maya Semina Travel Grant

Maya Semina is a Russian art historian, whose book about Filipp Maliavin was published by Moscow’s BooksMArt Press in 2014. Applications will be evaluated based on the academic merit of the paper topic and financial need. We are especially committed to subsidizing a graduate student who is attending the conference for the first time or who has no local institutional resources for travel support.

GRANT AMOUNT: Up to $1000 USD

ELIGIBILITY:

All applicants must be:

1. A student working at either the master’s or doctoral level with a thesis or dissertation topic related to Eastern European, Eurasian and/or Russian art and/or Architecture;

2. Presenting a paper contributing to advancement in this field at a panel at a CAA Annual Conference (chairs, discussants, and any other type of participants are not eligible to apply) or ASEEES Annual Convention;

3. A member of SHERA at the time of application;

4. Live outside the conference city;

5. Have not been recipients of this grant in the past.

DEADLINE: January 1, 2017 (Notifications will be sent by January 15, 2017)

• Complete application form (this has been sent to all SHERA members), which includes contact information, the e-mail address of the recommender; paper title, abstract, tentative budget, and statement of need;

• Two-page CV, listening relevant grants, publications, and talks;

• One (1) letter of reference from advisor or department chair, which includes confirmation that departmental and/or institutional conference travel funds are insufficient, sent by the recommender to SHERA.grants@gmail.com.

We urge applicants to be practical in estimating their travel and lodging budget. We advise sharing a room with another graduate student at the conference hotel, if feasible. We ask the grantee mention the SHERA Maya Semina Travel Grant as a partial sponsor of their participation.

GRANT DISBURSEMENT:

The grant will be disbursed upon presentation of receipts in the weeks following the conference.

SHERA is delighted to announce that it has received its first donation!

An anonymous donation has been made in honor of Maya Semina, an art historian from Russia, whose book about Filipp Maliavin was published by Moscow’s BooksMArt Press in 2014.

The donation will support one graduate student’s travel to any conference listed on SHERA’s News Blog. The procedure for selecting a grantee will be elaborated during a SHERA membership meeting at ASEEES in November 2016 and announced shortly thereafter.
